Gianandrea Noseda.
In Wednesday’s (3/19) Washington Post, Michael Andor Brodeur writes, “The National Symphony Orchestra announced Wednesday the extension of music director Gianandrea Noseda’s contract by four years, through the orchestra’s centenary season in 2031. Noseda, who was appointed music director designate in 2016 and launched his official tenure leading the orchestra in 2017, was engaged to lead the orchestra through the 2026-2027 season…. Noseda’s tenure has seen the orchestra make significant strides in its national and international presence…. The orchestra has made three visits to Carnegie Hall (with another scheduled for 2026) and completed one European tour. The orchestra’s five-date tour of Florida with guest violinist Hilary Hahn—its first domestic tour under Noseda—begins Wednesday in Fort Myers…. The NSO’s Noseda era has also been marked by significant challenges and disruptions, including the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent shutdowns, a stormy bout of contract negotiations that resulted in a short musicians strike, and, most recently, a sweeping change of leadership at the orchestra’s home, the Kennedy Center…. Under Noseda, who also serves as general music director of the Zurich Opera, the NSO has performed eight co-commissioned works, including five world premieres…. Later this month, the orchestra will announce details of its 95th season.”
