For their 2010 Gold Book Online submission, the Waco Symphony Council initiated a new fundraiser, the Celebrity Conductor Contest. Council volunteers convince prominent community leaders to compete for the privilege and fun of conducting the Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Sleigh Ride during the December Holiday Pops Concert. They assemble campaign packages for each candidate, complete with $20 ballots and information about the concert and the Symphony. Candidates kick off the campaign at the Council’s fall meeting and continue campaigning before and during intermission at two symphony concerts, at numerous community events, and on the Orchestra’s website. Final voting at the holiday concert adds to the festive atmosphere until, finally, the winner with the most votes is announced and steps up to the podium.
