The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences has announced this year’s Grammy nominees, to be awarded on February 10 and telecast live on CBS. Among the classical nominees in the category of Best Orchestral Performance are the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas (Adams: Harmonielehre; Short Ride In a Fast Machine); Oregon Symphony and Carlos Kalmar (“Music for a Time of War,” featuring works by Charles Ives, John Adams, Benjamin Britten, and Vaughan Williams); and the Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä (Sibelius Symphony Nos. 2, 5). Also nominated are the Boston Symphony Chamber Players (“Profanes et Sacrées,” featuring works by Ravel, Tomasi, Debussy, Dutilleux, and Françaix) for Best Chamber Music Small Ensemble Performance; the Kansas City Symphony and Michael Stern (“Homecoming: Kansas City Symphony Presents Joyce DiDonato”) for Best Classical Vocal Solo; the Dallas Symphony Chorus & Orchestra, Jaap Van Zweden (Steven Stucky: August 4, 1964), for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. In the Classical Producer of the Year category, nominees include Blanton Alspaugh (Milwaukee Symphony) and Tim Handley (Buffalo Philharmonic, Virginia Symphony, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Fort Smith Symphony in Arkansas).
