In Wednesday’s (1/16) Grand Rapids Press (Michigan), Jeffrey Kaczmarczyk writes, “Grand Rapids Symphony’s John Varineau has joined Calvin College’s music department as a full-time professor of music and director of orchestras. Varineau, however, isn’t leaving his post as associate conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony. But he will be giving up part-time teaching at three other colleges in West Michigan. … Varineau’s appointment will include conducting the Calvin Orchestra and Calvin Community Symphony and teaching other music courses beginning with the start of Calvin College’s spring semester on Jan. 28, 2013. ‘We’re delighted to have Mr. Varineau join our music faculty,’ said Bert Polman, chairman of Calvin College music department and chairman of the search committee. ‘Varineau brings with him a wealth of experience both as a performer and a teacher, and his modeling of excellent music-making will enrich the musical work we do with current students and alumni.’ … Varineau, who is in his 28th season with the Grand Rapids Symphony, has served in the past as a visiting orchestra conductor at Calvin College and Western Michigan University. He formerly was music director of the Holland Chamber Orchestra, now the Holland Symphony Orchestra, for four years.”
