In Thursday’s (1/6) Independent Record (Helena, Montana), the editors state, “A tip of the baton to Russ Martin, the new executive director of the Helena Symphony. He’s the sixth person in seven years to occupy the seat, and we hope his tenure here lasts long enough to bring some added stability to the organization. … It’s encouraging to know that Martin’s interview process last fall included meetings with the leaders of the Holter Museum of Art, the Archie Bray Foundation and other pillars of the local arts scene. By working in harmony, those groups can paint an arts picture that’s greater than the sum of the city’s individual organizational palettes. The recession has been challenging for nonprofits of all stripes, and symphonies across the country haven’t avoided the pain. … The smaller size of Montana’s symphonies means the organizations can be more nimble and responsive to changes in the economy. … Martin said he hopes to bring the same level of virtuosity to the administrative side of the organization as Maestro Allan R. Scott brings to the stage.”
