“The Houston Symphony announced its 2020-2021 season Wednesday … the seventh with music director Andrés Orozco-Estrada,” writes Andrew Dansby in Wednesday’s (1/29) Houston Chronicle. “The season will include multiple celebrations the semiquincentennial of Ludwig Van Beethoven…. Violinist Itzhak Perlman this season begins a three-year project as an artistic partner with the Houston Symphony. He’ll conduct and play Beethoven’s Romances for Violin and Orchestra for the opening night concert Sept. 17. He will also conduct Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Choral, on May 22-23, 2021.” Also planned is the April 2021 world premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Double Percussion Concerto with HSO Associate Principal Timpani and Percussionist Matthew Strauss and guest percussionist Svet Stoyanov. HSO Principal Cello Brinton Averil Smith and Yoonshin Song, newly appointed as concertmaster, will be featured in programs in January and May. The Houston Symphony Chorus and vocalists will join the orchestra for September performances of Franz Schmidt’s [1937] oratorio The Book with Seven Seals. The orchestra’s pops series, led by Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke, will include a February program entitled Virtual Reality in Concert: Music Illustrated, featuring Austin-based artist and dancer Topher Sipes and real-time 3D images, choreographed to music using Google’s Tilt Brush technology.
