“The Houston Symphony has announced layoffs and restructuring of several positions in its administrative department, including early retirement plans for senior leadership,” reports Wei-Huan Chen in Friday’s (5/19) Houston Chronicle. “ ‘After a careful evaluation of existing staff operations and resources, the Houston Symphony has decided to reorganize some administrative departments to ensure that we have the right structure and people to continue implementation of our 10-year strategic plan,’ Executive Director/CEO Mark Hanson wrote in a statement sent to the Chronicle. Hanson wrote there are now three less full-time administrative positions at the Symphony, but did not say how many total positions were ultimately affected by the restructuring. No musicians were affected as part of the restructuring. Hanson wrote that the administrative department ‘consists of 74 full-time positions. Prior to this reorganization, the administrative team was made up of 77 full-time positions.’ The news comes just days after the symphony raised $1.6 million for its education and community programming at the annual Houston Symphony Ball, the second-most successful ball in symphony history.” The article includes Hanson’s complete statement about the restructuring.
