Five musicians from Houston’s River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO) will travel to New York City to perform on October 18 in the crypt of Harlem’s Church of the Intercession. The concert will feature oboist Alecia Lawyer, ROCO’s founder, with Nathan Williams (clarinet), Kristin Wolfe Jenson (bassoon), Scott St. John (violin), and Kevin Lau (piano). The program will include music by Bill Douglas (Trio, movement III), Alyssa Morris (Nik-NAK), Heather Schmidt (Violin Sonata), Kevin Lau (Nightingale), and Anthony DiLorenzo (Anthem of Hope: Houston Strong). The latter composition was commissioned by ROCO in response to Houston’s resilience in the face of Hurricane Harvey’s devastation in 2017. ROCO’s October 18 performance is part of the “Crypt Sessions” classical performance series curated by Andrew Ousley that also includes food and drinks; Ousley curates a similar series, Angel’s Share, at the catacombs of the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
