In Friday’s (5/6) Huntsville Times (Alabama), Sarah Cure reports, “After evaluating six candidates for the newly vacant position of music director and conductor, the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Thursday afternoon announced Hungarian Gregory Vajda as Carlos Miguel Prieto’s successor. On Wednesday, the Symphony’s Board of Trustees voted to approve the 11-member search committee’s recommended candidate. Vajda, who currently resides in Portland, Ore., made his debut with the Huntsville Symphony on Jan. 22 when he guest-conducted in the 2010-2011 season’s Classical Series for ‘The Red Violin.’ He had 11 days to prepare for the concert after agreeing to substitute for a conductor who withdrew from the search. … Vajda, 37, will make his first appearance as the symphony’s new music director and conductor in the 2011-2012 season’s opening concert Oct. 1. He will conduct five of the six Classical Series concerts, two of the three Casual Classics Series concerts, the New Year’s Eve Pops concert, the four Young People’s Concerts, and the annual free family concert.”
