In Tuesday’s (7/10) Indianapolis Star, Jay Harvey reports, “Krzysztof Urbanski is now a musical force on three continents. The 29-year-old Polish national is the music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and chief conductor and artistic leader of the Trondheim (Norway) Symphony Orchestra. Starting in April, he will begin a three-year tenure as principal guest conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. … The appointment drew praise from ISO officials, who chose Urbanski to be the orchestra’s seventh music director in September 2011. Urbanski is working under a four-year contract. ‘Krzysztof’s star is rising,’ said Thomas R. Ramsey, ISO vice president and general manager. … Urbanski’s obligation to the Tokyo orchestra will be two weeks in summer and two weeks in the main season, according to Zachary French, the ISO’s manager of artistic planning. ‘This strengthens his brand—he’s truly an international conductor—and that’s a benefit for us as well,’ Ramsey said. ‘Where he goes, the Indianapolis name goes with him.’ Urbanski is scheduled to conduct the ISO for 10 weeks in each of the next three seasons. … Urbanski will be ceremoniously introduced in Tokyo with a news conference and reception Aug. 9 at the Polish Embassy, an occasion flanked by conducting engagements with the Tokyo Symphony on Aug. 7 and 12.”
