Monday (7/25) on Tampa Bay’s News 10 website WTSP.com, Preston Rudie writes, “When members of the Florida Orchestra go to Cuba in September, they’ll be bringing with them more than just their musical talents. The group will also be bringing with them dozens of donated musical instruments that will be given to some aspiring musicians in Havana. The orchestra began collecting the items earlier this summer and already they have received violins, trumpets, a trombone, an accordion, and several instrument storage cases. The items are being collected at all three area Sam Ash music stores. … One violin that was donated dates back to 1917, according to Florida Orchestra Associate Director of Marketing and Communications Henry Adams. … In addition to musical instruments, the orchestra is also accepting sheet music and other accessories. Because of paperwork that needs to be completed on the donated items, the Florida Orchestra says only items dropped off by this Friday will be sent to Cuba in September. Items donated after Friday will likely be sent to Cuba during another trip next year. Members of the Florida Orchestra are scheduled to leave for Cuba on September 29th and return on October 2nd.”
