In Thursday’s (7/5) Stockton Record (California), Tony Sauro writes, “Peter Jaffe readily—also happily—admits it. He’s an eternal optimist. ‘I’ve been accused of wearing rose-colored glasses,’ said the consistently upbeat Jaffe, looking ahead to his 18th season as Stockton Symphony [music director]. … While Stockton officials have filed for bankruptcy protection, Jaffe’s symphony is approaching its 86th season. Only two other California orchestras (San Francisco and Los Angeles) have been operating continuously for longer. … The season starts with Atlanta-based Cirque de la Symphonie. That’s never happened before. … ‘Pops’ shows have been increasingly popular. For 2012-13, Jaffe has scheduled one more—including a pair of double performances—without sacrificing five ‘classics’ concerts. Season tickets are being packaged separately. Jaffe’s musicians will perform 16 times, excluding community and school outreach programs. … Jaffe has programmed works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Peter Tchaikovsky, Giuseppe Verdi and Antonin Dvorak for 2012-13. Chris Brubeck, a jazz trombone player and son of Dave Brubeck, performs ‘Jazz Overture,’ a world premiere—a standard element for Jaffe—on Oct. 11 and 13.”
