“For its 91st season, the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra is shining the spotlight on the city’s heritage,” writes Kelly Urban in Wednesday’s (6/12) Tribune Democrat (Johnstown, PA). “The organization revealed the name of the 2019-2020 concert season—Made in Johnstown—at a news conference held Tuesday…. ‘This entire season will feature the art and industry created in Johnstown and the ethnic and cultural heritage that has made this city what it is today,’ [Music Director James Blachly] said. ‘In my three years as music director, I have been continually impressed with the history and cultural heritage of this city and region.’ … The symphony’s subscription series will include … seven concerts that will be held at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the Pitt-Johnstown campus.” The season will open in October with Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5, Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, with the orchestra joined by dancers from the Pittsburgh-based Tamburitzans company. Also planned are two holiday pops concerts; a “Movies From Johnstown” pops program that includes a pre-concert open-mic night; and a program of American choral music featuring the Johnstown Symphony Chorus and Inclined to Sing, the children’s chorus of the JSO.
