The Juilliard School has announced details of its biannual Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies, which takes place at Juilliard from May 26 to 30. The symposium, for students aged 13 to 23, includes master classes, recitals, lectures, and pedagogy sessions. Teacher/performers include violinists Monica Huggett, Chee-Yun Kim, David Kim, Joan Kwuon, Itzhak Perlman, and Joel Smirnoff. Pedagogy classes will be offered on topics such as “Biber to Bach” and “Bach and the Missing Orchestra,” led by Huggett, artistic director of Juilliard’s new Historical Performance program; “Performing Your Best When It Really Counts,” led by sports and music coach Don Greene; “My Brain’s Busy Even Though I’m Not: The Cognitive Neuroscience of Skill Learning,” led by Robert Duke, an author and professor at the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas; and “Beauty, Brains, and the Barber Violin Concerto,” led by Brian Lewis, a professor at the Butler School of Music, who also serves as the symposium’s artistic director. The symposium continues the legacy of renowned Juilliard violin teacher Dorothy DeLay, who served on the Juilliard violin faculty from 1948 until 2002. Among her students were Cho-Liang Lin, Midori, Sarah Chang, Gil Shaham, Shlomo Mintz, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and Paul Kantor. Her students also included symposium artistic director Brian Lewis and symposium faculty members Perlman, Smirnoff, and Chee-Yun.
