Violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra on October 18-20.
In Friday’s (10/18) WMTV (Madison, Wisconsin), Katie Castellano reports, “A well-known Madison violinist is returning to the stage this weekend with the Madison Symphony Orchestra. The New York Times recently said she’s a ‘versatile violinist who makes the music come alive.’ Kelly Hall-Tompkins visited WMTV on Thursday and spoke about the two different music pieces she will be performing. ‘One I have a long history with,’ said Hall-Tompkins. ‘The other one is a new piece for me. It’s a beautiful work by Ralph Vaughan Williams called The Lark Ascending. I honestly had avoided playing it for a long time.’ Hall-Tompkins said she had an early association with it being music at the time of her grandma’s passing. During the last couple weeks of her grandmother’s life, she said she played that [music] for her. She now carries that precious memory with her as she performs. ‘It’s a great honor to bring her here with me to Madison and to play those performances in her honor and memory,’ she said…. ‘The Madison Symphony is such a great orchestra. It’s so sensitive and such wonderful players.’ ” Nicholas Hersh led the concert, which also included works by Anna Clyne, Ravel, and Berlioz.
