In Saturday’s (11/10) Knoxville News-Sentinel (Tennessee), Harold Duckett writes, “One look at Knoxville Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Gabriel Lefkowitz’s website and it’s obvious that he is a very talented and very busy young man. He is an entrepreneur, composer and conductor, in addition to his duties with the KSO. He is principal conductor and artistic director of the Eon Contemporary Orchestra, an ensemble of young professional musicians in New York. … Only 24, he is very young to be in the chair of concertmaster for an orchestra like the KSO. The concertmaster is the head of the first violin section, the largest section of instruments in an orchestra He decides on the bowing (when all of the violins will play up strokes and down strokes so that the whole section looks like it is playing together) and assists the conductor in other decisions. … This is his second full season as concertmaster. This year, he started his own Concertmaster Series to perform chamber music with fellow KSO and Knoxville area musicians. The concerts, presented at Remedy Coffeehouse in the Old City, have nearly sold out, though there are a few remaining tickets for the Jan. 16 and March 13 concerts. The first concerts, in October, were standing room only. … He is currently writing a wind octet for members of the KSO.” Symphony magazine profiled several young concertmasters in the Winter 2012 issue; click here to read the article.
