Ten composition students have been selected to participate in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s National Composers Intensive, a three-day program for collegiate composers in L.A. from May 28 to 30. The program is being held in conjunction with the orchestra’s Next on Grand: Contemporary Americans festival, which presents music by established and emerging contemporary composers. The ten students are Daniel Allas (USC Thornton School of Music), Emily Cooley (Curtis Institute of Music), Natalie Dietterich (Yale School of Music), Guo Wei (Peabody Conservatory), Jennifer Hill (University of North Texas), José Martinez (University of Missouri), Anna Meadors (University of North Carolina at Greensboro), Patrick O’Malley (University of Southern California), Laura Schwartz (Illinois State University), and Andrew Stock (Cleveland Institute of Music). Students will write compositions for the L.A.-based contemporary-music ensemble Wild Up, to be performed during a public reading session at the Regent Theatre; attend LA Phil concerts and dress rehearsals; and participate in masterclasses and Q&A sessions with composers Steven Mackey, Julia Wolfe, Caroline Shaw, Michael Gordon, and Steve Reich.
