Kentucky’s Lexington Philharmonic will present a semistaged version of Osvaldo Golijov’s concert opera Ainadamar—Fountain of Tears on April 17 and 18 at the Lexington Opera House, its first collaboration with the Louisville-based Kentucky Opera. The opera, in three scenes to a libretto by David Henry Hwang, had its premiere at Tanglewood in 2003 and portrays the life of Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. “Each season, we have built toward continued improvement and expansion of the depth and breadth of LexPhil’s capabilities,” said Lexington Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Scott Terrell. “To bring this concert-opera to our community, written by one of the most important living composers of our time, is a rare treat, especially with the expertise afforded by director Chuck Hudson and talent of tenor Jesús Montoya,” a flamenco tenor who will sing the role of Ruiz Alonso, the same role he sang on the 2006 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the opera. Kentucky Opera Studio Artists will perform major roles, and University of Kentucky Opera Theater students will appear in the opera.
