American Marc Feldman, currently executive director of the Brittany-based Orchestre National de Bretagne, will join the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) as chief executive in May 2025. Feldman was executive director of California’s Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra from 2006 to 2011, where he secured new grants and donations, commissioned new works, conceived and implemented a neighborhoods concert series, and partnered with Carnegie Hall’s Link UP community engagement project. In 2011 he received a citation from the California State Senate for his commitment to the state’s diverse population. Prior to music administration, Feldman performed as solo bassoonist with the Orchestre National de Lyon, as well as orchestras throughout Canada and Europe. He was awarded a Tanglewood Fellowship under Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. While Feldman led the Orchestre National de Bretagne (beginning in 2011), the ensemble was awarded the “National Orchestra” label from the French Cultural Ministry for its groundbreaking programming and dedication to Breton culture and its people. Barbara Glaser, the NZSO’s acting chief executive since January, will continue in her role until Feldman’s arrival. She follows Kirsten Mason, who was acting chief executive from April to December last year.
