“The Maryland Symphony Orchestra is planning to hold its ‘Salute to Independence’ concert on July 2 at Hagerstown Community College’s amphitheater,” writes Julie Greene in Monday’s (6/7) Herald-Mail (Hagerstown, MD). “Approximately 550 people, including MSO subscribers, HCC faculty and staff, sponsors and first-responders, will be invited to sit in the college’s amphitheater, with the orchestra onstage, MSO spokesman Michael Harp said. Also, the MSO and HCC are inviting folks to hang out in the college’s parking lots so they can hear the concert and see the fireworks, Harp said. Estimated capacity is 10,000 people with the parking lots. The concert and fireworks also will be livestreamed for free on YouTube and the MSO’s streaming platform…. ‘Salute to Independence’ is traditionally held on the first Saturday of July at Antietam National Battlefield. But the concert cannot be held at the battlefield … due to a visitors center renovation project…. Cost savings also allow the MSO to have a guest vocalist, Nashville recording artist Rachel Potter…. The campus site also will allow for … possibly the Maryland National Guard to fire Howitzer blanks during the ‘1812 Overture,’ Harp said. The cannons are among the details still being worked out.”
