“Kent Nagano and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal will bring music to the citizens of Lac-Mégantic on Nov. 1, a little less than four months after the Eastern Townships community was devastated by a train derailment,” writes Arthur Kaptainis in Wednesday’s (10/23) Gazette(Montreal). The July 6 derailment and subsequent fire killed 47 people and destroyed much of Lac-Mégantic’s downtown. “ ‘Maestro Nagano and the OSM musicians are always enthusiastic about setting off to meet the public,’ chief executive officer Madeline Careau said in a statement. ‘But this concert isn’t like the others. More than ever, emotions will be running high.’ Starting with Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute, the program will feature Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, with four OSM violinists as soloists, as well as Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in the Ravel transcription. The free concert starts at 6 p.m. at Lac-Mégantic’s Centre sportif.… This is not the first time Nagano and the OSM have played a free concert for a shaken community. In 2008, they performed a concert in front of the town hall of Montreal North after the shooting of teenager Fredy Villanueva.”
