In Wednesday’s (11/28) Post-Standard (Syracuse, New York), Melinda Johnson writes, “Plans for a formal debut concert by the group that hopes to succeed the bankrupt Syracuse Symphony Orchestra are to be announced in a news conference today. But much of the news music lovers may be waiting for—including the performing name for the group and the schedule of concerts for this season—will apparently have to wait until that concert, a holiday show to be held Dec. 14 at the Crouse-Hinds Theater in the John H. Mulroy Civic Center. The group, now going under the business name Musical Associates of Central New York, will join government leaders to discuss concert details and voice support for the new orchestra. Invited speakers are Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney, Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, Musical Associates board chair Robert Daino, board member and musician Jon Garland Ann Clarke, dean of Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. The Dec. 14 show, ‘Holiday Symphonic Spectacular,’ will be Musical Associates of CNY’s first opportunity to show the community its reinvigorated approach to presenting popular and classical music. … In October, Onondaga County lawmakers voted to give the group $120,000, in three installments, to get under way. That money comes from hotel occupancy tax, not property taxes. To receive the installments, the orchestra must keep to its performance schedule.”
