The 110-year old Honolulu Symphony filed for bankruptcy in December 2010. But since then, a dedicated team of musicians, orchestra experts, and leaders in Honolulu have been working on bringing symphonic music back to the islands. How are they doing it? Conductor JoAnn Falletta, who has been serving as an artistic advisor to the newly formed Hawai’i Symphony, talks to SymphonyNOW about the process.
The new issue of SymphonyNOW also looks at GJ Rockestra, a new project by the Grand Junction Symphony that marries the sounds of the orchestra with classic rock. The orchestra held local auditions for vocalists to sing the classic hits, which created quite a buzz in the community. A new books column looks at recently-published composer and conductor profiles. And League President and CEO Jesse Rosen’s latest video blog spotlights the New Jersey Symphony and Buffalo Philharmonic, two orchestras that are not only surviving but thriving in these tough times.
SymphonyNOW is the League’s new, online-only publication that provides timely stories about orchestras on a weekly basis. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
