The Discovery Orchestra’s educational concert “Discover Beethoven’s Fifth” will air today (5/23) on New Jersey public television affiliate NJN at 9 p.m. (ET). The program, led and hosted by Artistic Director George Marriner Maull and taped in April 2010 before a live audience at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center, has previously aired nationally over the nationally distributed American Public Television network, but today’s broadcast represents the New Jersey television premiere. Each Discovery Concert begins with a five- to ten-minute music selection, followed by question-and-answer exchanges between the conductor and audience; concerts also use a simplified “picturization” of the score, with numbered musical events such as crescendo or sequence. Each concert concludes with the entire selection played straight through a second time, with numbers in the listening guide displayed for audience members. The Warren, New Jersey-based ensemble’s first Discovery Concert took place in 1996; programs are designed for children as young as eight years old.
