“A little roll of the drums, please, for the New Mexico Philharmonic,” writes David Steinberg in Sunday’s (12/4) Albuquerque Journal (New Mexico). “The new Albuquerque-based orchestra’s inaugural season begins Saturday, Dec. 10, at Popejoy Hall with a new face on the podium and a new face in the wings. The Philharmonic, which formed after the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra filed for bankruptcy and closed last spring, will have Robert Tweten of Santa Fe guest conducting a program of familiar music—Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Aaron Copland’s ‘Rodeo’ and six of his Old American Songs. … Out of the spotlight is another new Philharmonic face—Marian Tanau, the organization’s recently hired executive director. Tanau said he’s part of a team of dedicated musicians and board members. ‘We are working to grow the organization in a healthy way,’ Tanau said in a phone interview from his home in Ann Arbor, Mich. … The Philharmonic has three of its musicians working as part-time staff, Tanau said. Clarinetist Lori Lovato is coordinating youth concerts and writing grant proposals; violist Chris Rancier is handling marketing and public relations; and bassoonist Stefanie Przybylska is assisting in finding venues and organizing neighborhood and community concerts.”
