Washington D.C. may be a hot spot for tourists interested in soaking up the nation’s heritage, but for musically-minded music students, a summer in the Capital is serious business. From July 2 to 30, 56 students are taking part in the National Symphony’s Summer Music Institute, which includes private lessons, rehearsals, coachings, conducting classes, seminars, master classes, and performances at the Kennedy Center. Three participants—Julia Kim, 17; Jessie Zhu, 16; and Brian Goetzinger, 19—offer some personal perspective and highlights.
Also this week, New York Times reporter and avid clarinetist Daniel J. Wakin comments on the Baltimore Symphony’s Rusty Musicians program, and a new video feature spotlights the Play On, Philly! music education program.
SymphonyNOW is the League’s new, online-only publication, with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
