It almost seemed like he’d live forever. But on November 5 Elliott Carter, the 103-year-old iconoclast composer whose productivity seemed to increase with age, died in his home in New York City. To pay tribute to the famed inventor of “metric modulation” we re-publish Frank J. Oteri’s “The Carter Century” from the November-December 2008 issue of Symphony.

Also this week, we take a look at the Canada-based Victoria Symphony’s John Cage festival—featuring a full orchestra performance of his notorious 4’33’’—and the Los Angeles Times’ Mark Swed offers a little historical perspective on the challenges orchestras face today.

SymphonyNOW is the League’s online-only publication, updated with timely stories about orchestras every week. You’ll find SymphonyNOW on the right-hand side of the Hub homepage.
