The New School’s College of Performing Arts in New York City is opening a new Philip Glass Institute, with Lisa Bielawa as composer-in-residence and chief curator. The Institute will launch on January 6 with a performance by the Philip Glass Ensemble and a panel discussion with Philip Glass; Lisa Bielawa; and Richard Kessler, executive dean of the New School’s College of Performing Arts. The event will include a performance of an excerpt from the TV opera Vireo by Bielawa, who is a longtime vocalist in the Philip Glass Ensemble. In her role at the Glass Institute, Bielawa will create new works, curate concerts, and create new courses for students in the college’s three schools: the Mannes School of Music, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and School of Drama. Students will learn composition, sound design, musicology, and arts management from members of the Philip Glass Ensemble and frequent Glass collaborators including Matt Haimovitz, Jennifer Koh, Bob Hurwitz, and Dennis Russell Davies.
