The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra in Massachusetts has established the new Furtado Family Scholarship, which will provide financial aid to students in the NBSO’s youth orchestra programs. For nearly sixty years, members of the Furtado family have performed in the NBSO, taught area students, and performed in their own Furtado Family Quartet. The orchestra created the scholarship after four sisters from the family— violinists Teresa Ouellette and Marilyn Melanson, violist Susan Bouley, and cellist Judith Stoltenberg—retired from the orchestra at the end of the 2017-18 season. Under Music Director Yaniv Dinur, the NBSO performs classical and pops concerts at Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in New Bedford. The orchestra also performs a chamber series at area churches, and reaches 25,000 students each year with education programs in southeastern Massachusetts.
