“Ted Hearne, a singer and composer known for his topical, politically sharp-edged works—‘The Katrina Ballads,’ about the inadequacy of the government’s response in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, for example, and ‘Ripple,’ based on documents made public by WikiLeaks—has been named the third annual New Voices composer by the San Francisco Symphony, the New World Symphony and the music publisher Boosey & Hawkes, which jointly administer the program,” writes Allan Kozinn in Monday’s (4/7) New York Times. “The New Voices position is a residency of sorts, with some unusual features, including a stint working with Boosey & Hawkes in New York.… New Voices also includes commissioned works. Mr. Hearne will compose a chamber piece and a symphonic score, both to be workshopped during the 2014-15 season with the New World Symphony, the training orchestra directed by Michael Tilson Thomas in Miami Beach. The works will have their premieres there in 2015, and will then travel west to Mr. Thomas’s other orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, where Mr. Hearne will work with Mr. Thomas and the ensemble for two weeks before the pieces have their West Coast premieres…. The first two New Voices composers were Zosha Di Castri and Cynthia Lee Wong.”
