“Veteran Dallas Symphony violinist and devoted educator Arkady Fomin died on Monday, after a long illness,” writes Scott Cantrell in Monday’s (5/5) Dallas Morning News. “With his great mane of white hair, Fomin was one of the most recognizable figures in the DSO’s first violin section.… ‘Arkady was a beloved teacher and cherished musician with the DSO,’ said Jonathan Martin, president and CEO of the DSO. ‘He was a fixture of the Dallas musical community, and his talent and inspiration touched the lives of hundreds of artists. We will miss him terribly.’ Born in Riga, Latvia in 1946, Fomin was trained at the Latvian State Conservatory. He toured as a soloist with the Latvian State Philharmonic and was principal violinist of the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. He joined the DSO in 1975, and three years later established a summer training program for pre-college string students. After associations with the University of Texas at Dallas and Southern Methodist University, the New Conservatory of Dallas became an independent organization in 1994, with year-round activities including solo recitals, chamber music and string orchestra … and a summer program at the Music in the Mountains festival in Durango, Colorado and Gmunden, Austria.”
