In Monday’s (12/13) San Diego Union-Tribune, Caroline Dipping writes, “From playing the cello in the San Diego Symphony to teaching musical theory to scores of future musicians, most of Jean Moe’s life seemed to be set to music. One of her fondest memories was of famed violinist Itzhak Perlman singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her at her 80th birthday party in New York while she was on a Chicago Symphony tour to Carnegie Hall. Among her chief delights was talking with kindred musicians, and her favorite classical work was always the piece she was currently performing. … Mrs. Moe died of heart failure on Nov. 28 at Scripps Mercy Hospital. She was 90. In addition to being a cellist with the San Diego Symphony from 1948 to 1970, Mrs. Moe played the instrument in the Bach Aria Group of La Jolla, the Sherwood Hall Orchestra and the San Diego Opera. … Tantamount to performing for Mrs. Moe was teaching. Shortly after she earned her master’s degree in music in 1966 from what was then San Diego State College, she helped develop the college’s Comprehensive Musicianship curriculum, which she then taught for 16 years.”
