A new youth orchestra has been established under the auspices of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra in Sandusky, Ohio. Known as the Firelands Symphony Youth Orchestra, it will be open to students in grades 7-12, and the parent organization has announced that auditions will be held May 17 and 19, with the first rehearsal to take place in September. The youth orchestra will practice weekly in preparation for concerts in Fall 2015 and Spring 2016. For the inaugural season, only string students are being invited to audition; wind, brass, and percussion students will be added for the second season. Firelands Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Ron Brooker will serve as music director and conductor of the youth orchestra, and Jody Chaffee, FSO musician and librarian, as its general manager. “We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to students in the Firelands area,” said Brooker, a former string teacher for the Findlay and Sandusky city schools. “We hope to enhance the orchestral experience and overall music education of the students.” Additional information about the Firelands Symphony Youth Orchestra can be found at www.firelandssymphony.com
