On January 10, the Omaha Symphony will perform a program entitled “I Hear America Singing” as part of Omaha’s Westward O, a citywide celebration of the American West throughout 2015-16. Music Director Thomas Wilkins will lead Virgil Thompson’s Suite from The River, a 1937 documentary about the Mississippi River; Steven Stucky’s American Muse, incorporating poems by American poets John Berryman, e.e. cummings, A.R. Ammon, and Walt Whitman; David Diamond’s Rounds for String Orchestra, and Eric Ewazen’s Chamber Symphony. The performance takes place at Omaha’s Joslyn Art Museum, one of multiple arts organizations participating in Westward O; others include Durham Museum, Film Streams, Opera Omaha, Omaha Area Youth Orchestras, and Ballet Nebraska. More information about Westward O can be found at www.westwardomaha.org.
