In Thursday’s (5/24) Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Diana Nollen writes, “Maestro Timothy Hankewich is ready to trade his bow tie for a ball cap and let the symphonic pop fly Saturday (5/26/12) at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids. Orchestra Iowa is teaming up with Jeans ‘n’ Classics and the Kernels to present a triple header of ‘Good Vibrations: Music of the Beach Boys’ at 4 p.m., followed by a ballgame and fireworks. … Hankewich, 44, of Cedar Rapids, wasn’t born when the Beach Boys introduced their California surfin’ sounds to the world 50 years ago. But he grew up with their groove. … He’s been to the Golden State as an adult and is hoping to channel some West Coast sunshine for this third orchestra outing to the Kernels’ ballpark. … Local audiences will hear such favorites as ‘California Girls,’ ‘Kokomo,’ ‘Surfer Girls’ and ‘Good Vibrations’ in the afternoon hit parade. … ‘It reaches out to entirely new audiences,’ [Hankewich] says. ‘It puts the orchestra in a new environment. It forces our institution to solve logistical problems and also inserts the orchestra into the consciousness of a variety of different constituencies.’ ”
