The Philadelphia Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. will perform in separate events during Pope Francis’s visit to the United States this week. On September 23 at 8.p.m., Evan Rogister will lead the NSO in “A Concert to Celebrate Pope Francis” at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, co-presented by the Archdiocese of Washington and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The free concert will also feature mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine, members of the National Youth Orchestra of Uruguay, bandoneon player Raúl Jaurena, ten-year-old jazz pianist José André Montaño, actress Eva Longoria, and DC Youth Slam Team member Hannah Smallwood. The Philadelphia Orchestra and Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin will perform with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and Colombian vocalist and guitarist Juanes on September 26 at Philadelphia’s Festival of Families on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Nézet-Séguin and the orchestra will also participate in the Papal Mass on September 27 with the Philadelphia Archdiocesan choir. New York classical radio station WQXR has assembled a “classical music listeners’ guide to Pope Francis’s visit” to Washington, D.C. and New York.
