“It was September 1989 when the Yaquina Chamber Orchestra was founded by a dedicated group of musicians and creative artists in Newport … with a mission to enhance the quality of life in Oregon’s coastal communities,” writes Barbara Covell in Tuesday’s (9/25) Oregon Coast Today. “The orchestra experienced much growth and went on to change its name to the Newport Symphony Orchestra in 2004. Adam Flatt joined the group in 2007 as music director…. The hugely popular Flatt has introduced new talent, innovative ideas and musical diversity…. [Executive Director] John Lavrakas … described Flatt as a ‘musician’s conductor. They love the music he picks,’ Lavrakas said… The orchestra’s 30th anniversary celebration will be a two-day tour de force … on … Sept. 29 and 30 in Newport and Corvallis [featuring] Ernest Bloch’s ‘Baal Shem’ and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 [with] more than 150 vocalists … In December, the orchestra and Porthole Players will jointly sponsor ‘Amal and the Night Visitors’ with acting, singing, dancing and music. The group is also looking at partnerships with local photographers to create visual stories for its concerts. The orchestra is exploring other avenues of helping community organizations, schools, and civic organizations provide family-friendly music.”
