On November 13, the Orlando Philharmonic in Florida will host the YCC Composium, a free concert and symposium featuring compositions by seven teenaged composers, winners of its National Young Composers Challenge for U.S. musicians ages 13 to 18. The composers (all age 18 or less at the time of submission) are Ryan Dodge (18, from Winston-Salem, NC), Joseph Prior (17, Winter Park, FL), Bradley Kroehling (16, Merritt Island, FL), Caleb Bancroft (15, Oviedo, FL), Tyler Durham (19, Nixa, MO), Kyle Duffee (18, Pueblo West, CO), and Stephen Spies (17, Albany, CA). The National Young Composers Challenge also includes a free workshop for all competition entrants in March 2012 that includes lectures by leading composers about composition, orchestration, scoring, and music-notation software, as well as discussions and demonstrations by Orlando Philharmonic musicians on writing techniques for each orchestral instrument. At the YCC Composium on November 13, the Orlando Philharmonic will perform each winning composer’s score, and Music Director Christopher Wilkins will provide feedback to the composers and lead a discussion of the works.
