In Saturday’s (1/30) Orange County Register (California), Timothy Mangan writes about the Pacific Symphony’s Music Mixology initiative, whose second installment “took place Thursday night at the Boathouse Collective in Costa Mesa, a hip, post-industrial dive…. The Clash boomed over loudspeakers…. A menu listing the musical selections … suggested drink pairings…. It had cartoon depictions of the musicians on it: [Bridget] Dolkas playing her violin as she bathes (clothed) in a giant martini glass; [Ben] Smolen pouring a drink from a cocktail shaker as he plays the flute with one hand…. A small sheet of paper with blank spaces to answer … trivia questions also was distributed…. Winners of the successive trivia rounds would get to pick the next musical selection…. ‘I think it’s fun to put orchestral classical music in this context,’ Colin Browne, standing near the bar, boomed…. Is it the hope that these barflies will buy tickets to hear the symphony at the Segerstrom Center? ‘I think that would definitely be a great byproduct of it, and we’re giving away concert tickets to our classical series and pops series,’ Smolen said. ‘But I think that we’ve been trying also to think of this as its own entity.’ ”
