The Philadelphia Orchestra’s has released details of its 2010 Greenfield Student Competition for young musicians from the greater Philadelphia area. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on December 1, 2009; applications must be submitted online. Preliminary auditions will be held at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center in January, and the final round will take place on March 1, before an invited audience. Instrumentalists may compete in three categories: children’s (ages 12 and under), junior (ages 13-16), and senior (ages 17-21). Applicants for the vocal division must be between ages 17 and 29. Winners receive a cash award and the opportunity to perform as a soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra during the 2009-10 season. The annual competition was established in 1933 by Music Director Leopold Stokowski, and was renamed in 1992 following an endowment gift from the Albert M. Greenfield Foundation.
