“Mayor Nutter today announced that the Philadelphia Orchestra plans to launch a European tour in 2015, ending their journey with two performances at The South Bank Centre in London on June 5th and 6th, 2015,” writes Leah Kauffman in Monday’s (11/4) Philadelphia Inquirer. “It will be the first time that London will get to hear the Philadelphia Orchestra led by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who is the former Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic. The Orchestra’s first transatlantic tour was with Music Director Eugene Ormandy in 1949 where they performed 28 concerts in just 27 days. It was also the first time an American orchestra crossed the Atlantic after WWII. The Philadelphia Orchestra has not been in London since 2011. Mayor Nutter, who is currently leading a trade mission to both Israel and the UK, sees the Orchestra as an ambassador for the city and hopes that it can bring international investment to Philadelphia. ‘The Philadelphia Orchestra is not just one of the most artistically-acclaimed orchestras in the world, but it is also a vital cultural ambassador for the city, and one that brings tremendous economic development to the city by making the case for doing business in Philadelphia,’ said Mayor Nutter.”
