The Phoenix Symphony will present Uzu and Muzu of Kakaruzu—An Anti-Bullying Concert on April 1 and 2 as part of its Symphony for the Schools education program. The Uzu and Muzu program—performed during the school day at Symphony Hall—is based on composer Avner Dorman’s musical setting of the children’s book Uzu and Muzu of Kakaruzu, by Ephraim Sidon of Israel. The book is about a disagreement between two brothers that escalates into a conflict that lasts for generations. In the musical setting of the book, solo percussionists represent the brothers and their families, and a wall is built between the soloists onstage. “We are pleased to bring this unique concert to Valley students to focus on the importance of positive open communication and conflict resolution to combat the bullying that takes place in classrooms, on playgrounds and online,” said Jim Ward, the Phoenix Symphony’s president and CEO. The Stockton Symphony’s world premiere of Dorman’s Uzu and Muzu of Kakaruzu was covered in the summer 2012 issue of Symphony magazine.
