The Danish composer Poul Ruders will be celebrated at New York City’s Scandanivia House on March 26, the eve of his 60th birthday, with a concert of his music. Performers will include the Juilliard Percussion Ensemble, iO String Quartet, pianist Vassily Primakov, guitarist David Starobin, accordion player Mikko Luoma, and percussionist Daniel Druckman. Ruders will speak at the concert about his music and works on the program, which include a world premiere, Pages I-X, as well as Star Prelude and Love Fugue (1990) and New Rochelle Suite (2005). The composer, best known for his operas The Handmaid’s Tale and Kafka’s Trial, has an opera, Dancer in the Dark, and two symphonic world premieres scheduled during the next two years: Symphony No. 3 (“Dream Catcher”), with the Royal Danish Orchestra, and his Symphony No. 4 (“Organ Symphony”) with Dallas Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and Odense Symphony.
