A report Wednesday (9/12) on the Central Jersey Sun website states, “On Friday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 pm, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra presents Behind the Music with Chinese-American composer Zhou Tian, whose piece The Grand Canal will be given its U.S. premiere on the PSO’s Oct. 7 Classical Series concert, China’s Glory. The afternoon forum takes place at the Arts Council of Princeton’s Solley Theatre. Zhou, who will be in residence with the PSO for the weekend, has had his works performed by some of the world’s major orchestras. His compositions have been described as ‘absolutely beautiful’ and ‘utterly satisfying’ (Fanfare). At Behind the Music, he will discuss the process of composing his piece, how he was inspired by China’s famous waterway, and how he incorporated traditional Chinese musical elements. The Grand Canal, composed in 2009, was commissioned by China’s Hangzhou Federation of Literary and Art Circles, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. … PSO Music Director Rossen Milanov joins Zhou in the talk, discussing his experience with and understanding of the piece, and how he has approached preparing the U.S. premiere of The Grand Canal for the concert China’s Glory.”
