On January 20 at the Princeton Public Library, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra will host Soundtracks: Calligraphy as Art and Inspiration, a discussion of traditional Chinese calligraphy. Composer Jing Jing Luo, whose orchestral work Tsao Shu (Grass Scripts) will be performed on the PSO’s January 31 concert, will speak with Caroline Harris, associate director for education at the Princeton University Art Museum, which houses a collection of Chinese calligraphy. Luo’s piece was inspired by the physical brushstrokes used in calligraphy. The Soundtracks event is free, and refreshments will be served. Luo, a native of Beijing, is at the Princeton Symphony this year through Music Alive: New Partnerships, a residency program of New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras designed to establish new relationships between composers and orchestras.
