Classical radio stations in North Carolina and New York are holding competitions for classical musicians. In Davidson/Charlotte, N.C., WDAV is accepting submissions through January 13 for its third annual Young Chamber Musicians Competition. Ensembles of musicians between ages 14 and 25 may submit video performances at ycmc.wdav.org to enter the competition; winners will receive a total of $10,000, and finalists will perform in a live-judged concert on May 1, 2016 at Davidson College, to be broadcast live on WDAV 89.9 FM. Judges include Alan Black, the Charlotte Symphony’s principal cellist; John Gordon Ross, music director of the Western Piedmont Symphony, and composer Dan Locklair, on the faculty at Wake Forest University. In New York City, radio station WQXR is holding a Classical Moonlighters Competition for amateur musicians age 13 and up. The deadline to enter the competition is February 15. In March, ten semifinalists will be selected in each age category (13-18, 19-34, and 35+). In May, three finalists chosen through online voting will perform at the Greene Space in Manhattan before judges and a live audience; the event will video webcast. Winners in each category will win private professional coachings and the opportunity to perform at Lincoln Center’s Rubenstein Atrium.
