“The Salina Symphony’s upcoming season is being billed as a ‘symphonic fusion,’ ” writes Gary Demuth in Friday’s (7/11) Salina Journal (Kansas; password-protected). “Concerts will feature classical orchestral music combined with creative dance, Broadway-quality vocals and visual elements, said Salina Symphony conductor Ken Hakoda. ‘Last year, we did a lot of experimentation with multimedia elements,’ he said. ‘This year takes it a little further.’ … The season opens Oct. 5 with guest pianist Tatiana Tessman, who will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Tessman is the wife of the new orchestra director at Kansas Wesleyan University, Jesse Henkensiefken. Henkensiefken will conduct the Rachmaninoff concerto and also will be the symphony’s new principal cellist, Hakoda said.… ‘Our Favorite Things’ on Nov. 9 will be a tribute to the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein…. A fusion of classical music and contemporary dance will be featured March 29 in a concert showcasing popular American classics.… The season concludes May 3 with a celebration of women in music. The program includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral suite Scheherazade, composer Libby Larsen’s Songs from Letters, and a premiere composition by Kansas Wesleyan alumna Katherine Falk.”
