California’s San Bernardino Symphony reports that it has expanded its Music in the Schools program into 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classrooms this year from July to December. The existing program, established nineteen years ago, serves 5,000 third-grade students in San Bernardino City Unified School District schools, who receive an introduction to musical instruments through docent visits from members of the orchestra’s Guild. Under the newly expanded program, a string quartet from the orchestra—Todor Pelev, Tom Sender, Charles Hebenstreit, and Ana Marie Maldonado—will visit students to give instruction on the four families of instruments used in an orchestra, as well as discussion and demonstration of music featuring those instruments, arranged for string quartet. The new program is a collaboration between the orchestra and the County of San Bernardino, the City of San Bernardino, and the San Bernardino Unified School District.
