“The San Diego Symphony said Tuesday that its 2016-17 downtown season has set a new sales record, with the Jacobs Masterworks classical series bringing in a total that’s 15.6 percent higher than last year’s,” writes Michael James Rocha in Wednesday’s (6/6) San Diego Union-Tribune. “Combined with the orchestra’s 2016 Bayside Summer Nights outdoor series … the symphony also set an overall record for the number of paid admissions for an entire fiscal year with 154,614 tickets sold…. The Jacobs Masterworks classical season garnered a paid-attendance total that’s 8.2 percent above last season…. In total, the season’s sales number came in 6.5 percent ahead of the 2015-16 season…. According to Joan Cumming, the symphony’s vice president of marketing and communications, the growth can be attributed to … programming, better use of the ticketing system and database, social media and special ticket pricing.… ‘The entire San Diego Symphony team of musicians and staff are thrilled to be reaching more people,’ … said Martha Gilmer, the symphony’s chief executive officer. ‘The community responded very favorably to the orchestra, and as we continue our music director search, we’ve been able to bring some of the world’s best artists to perform with our talented musicians.’ ”
