In June 2016, the Irving M. Klein International String Competition will be hosted for the first time by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, in partnership with the California Music Center. The competition, established in 1986, previously was presented at San Francisco State University. The annual competition, under the artistic directorship of Mitchell Sardou Klein, is open to musicians between ages 15 and 23 and awards prizes of up to $30,000. Previous winners include Jennifer Koh, Mark Kosower, Vadim Gluzman, Jennifer Frautschi, Alban Gerhardt, Frank Huang, and Francois Salque. The competition is named for Irving M. Klein, affiliated for many years with the California Music Center in San Francisco. Irving Klein, a cellist, also played in Leopold Stokowski’s All-American Youth Orchestra and with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Reiner, and was a member of the Claremont Quartet.
